Natural Beauty Tips For Face And Body By The Ancients
We've all heard the term "natural beauty" - it's a phrase that's been used to describe egyptian queens and greek goddesses in the ancient world or models and movie stars in this day and age.
Natural beauty has been defined as gorgeous skin, sometimes a radiant smile. We haven't always had cosmetics like the ones we do today, Cleopatra couldn't just drive down to the local department store to buy a bottle of her favourite lotion or serum, so what did ladies like Cleopatra do?
If Cleopatra, Helen of Troy and other iconic beauties would have their own natural beauty tips to share, and these are what I'm going to share with you today.
Beauty Tip #1 Cleansing:
As your skin layers drops off, new layers form as part of the skins natural renewal process. When you remove old cells, this stimulates new cell production. It also encourages the absorption of beneficial moisture and nutrients from moisturizers and serums afterwards.
Using natural cleansers like Almond oil, coconut milk or fruit juices mixed with other natural ingredients help to lift off dead skin cells and stimulate new growth. Cleansers naturally rich in fruit acids keep your skin free of skin buildup that can make your complexion appear dull or flaky.
Other ingredients like tea tree oil, other essential oils or spices are great for acne cleansers. Their antibacterial properties combat bacteria while other compounds in these ingredients soothe and heal skin.
There are many natural cleansers you can make depending on what type of skin you have and what skin issues you want to address.
Beauty Tip #2 Toning:
Your skin has a natural PH of around 5.5. Some cleansers - whether home made or commercial can alter this. If you are using a cleanser that is acidic or alkaline, you can rebalance your skin by making a toner with a few drops of lavender and apple cider vinegar added to a cup of water. You can then spray or dab this mixture on to your skin.
Most of the time I don't bother with toner, as most natural skin care recipes are close natural ph neutral, but some more potent recipes do effect skin more than others.
Beauty Tip #3 Exfoliation:
As I mentioned in the first tip, lifting away dead skin layers stimulates your skin into producing new cells. This is where exfoliators come in.
There are two different types of exfoliation, granular and chemical based. Granular or mechanical exfoliation is where you use fine grains to physically buff off the tops layers of skin. Chemical exfoliation, of chemical peels are where you use acids to remove them. Examples of granular exfoliation are salt scrubs, ground oatmeal of grounds husks (husks can be quite harsh on skin) or corundum crystal microdermabrasion which in my opinion is the most effective type of granular exfoliation other than two natural recipes I recommend.
Chemical or fruit acid peels dissolve the top layers of skin, and also send a signal to the body that it needs to repair and regenerate the lost cells. Exfoliation effectively shocks your skin into repair and renewal mode.
There are several ingredients you can use to make a homemade facial peel, these ingredients contain fruit acids and active enzymes similar to what you would find in top of the line skin care products.
There are many masks that can also be used as exfoliators that combine the benefits of granular and chemical exfoliation.

Beauty Tip #4 Moisturizers And Serums:
After cleansing and exfoliating, your pores are open, your cells are in renewal mode, and so they are very receptive to absorbing anything that you apply to your skin.
This is where moisturizers come in. Many cheaper commercial moisturizers have a large molecular structure which means the moisture and nutrients they contain sit on the surface of your skin locking in moisture to the tops layers of your skin.
More advanced moisturizer will contain essential fatty acids, which have a small molecular structure which can penetrate through the top protective layers of skin taking with them moisture and any beneficial nutrients that have been added to these base ingredients with them.
Many carrier oils like rose hip, wheatgerm, jojoba and almond oil are rich in fatty acids. Borage oil and avocado oil are also very high in essential fatty acids and liposomes. They also help support cell membrane and cell structure to lock in moisture and leave your skin looking firmer and plumper.
Many essential oils are rich vitamins A and E which are powerful antioxidants that protect skin against free radical damage. Vitamin A helps skins repair process and stimulate cell regeneration. Other essential oils like sea buckthorn, and tamanu are highly regenerative. They can effectively work from deep within the epidermis to repair damaged cells.
Cleopatra used Frankincense and Myrhh with honey in her skin care routine, these ingredients are all repairing and antiaging, you can too!
You can also use ingredients like honey and milk, a favourite of Cleopatra and other ancient queens. Honey is a natural humectant, meaning it attracts moisture from the air. Honey is also antimicrobial so is great for acne, cuts and other skin infections. So is turmeric and many chopped herbs. These potent ingredients can repair spots, scars and reduce lines.
Aloe vera is another popular ingredient seen in paintings of ruins. Aloe vera calms and heals skin.
Oatmeal is great in masks and soothes itching. Use the strained liquid from oatmeal for itching from bites of skin rashes. It is also very moisturizing.
Coconut oil has been used by Tahitian princesses for its antibacterial and moisturizing properties. It even offers a sun protection factor of around SPF4 as does sesame oil.

- Natural skin care recipes are time consuming to make: Most natural skin are recipes that I make can be made in ten minutes, some take a little longer to allow for products cooling (up to 25 minutes)
- Natural homemade skin care recipes re not as effective as store bought products: Most factory or commercially products either contain extracts of natural ingredients, or synthetically produced copies of their active ingredients. If you use fresh, pure ingredients it has been proven that they are at least as if not more effective than store bought products that are loaded with fillers and sometimes chemical preservatives.
- Natural homemade skin care recipes don't feel as good or feel "weird" on your skin: If you use the wrong ingredients or don't mix them the right way this can be the case. Natural ingredients combined in the right way fell beautiful on your skin and leave your skin feeling soft and supple.

Masks and treatments. Many masks purify skin and close pores. Clays are great for drawing impurities from skin. You can use avocado, banana and yogurt as moisturizing bases for skin care masks. Many of these bases are loaded with essential fatty acids, antioxidants and other beneficial ingredients to really nourish skin.
You can combine different ingredients depending on what you are wanting to achieve for your skin.

Many people underestimate the benefits of homemade masks and skin care recipes. If you use the right ingredients in the right combinations, they work synergistically to penetrate deep in to your skins layers.
Beauty Tip# 6 Drink:
And no I don't mean coffee or alcohol, I mean water with a squeeze of lemon juice to alkalise your body and allow the skin products you apply to lock in moisture inside your cells. You body is made mainly of water, and your skin care products can only help to hold this water in your cells if it there in the first place.
Beauty Tip #7 Eat:
Eat lots of antioxidant rich foods that scavenge free radicals that damage your skin and prematurely age you.
Include safflower oil, olive oil and avocado oil in your diet. These oils are rich in essential fatty acids and help to lubricate your skins natural sebum from the inside out. This means your sebum is more viscous and will not get clogged as easily leaving you with less blackheads and skin that can remove build up more easily.
Summary
The ancient beauties knew how to combine these ingredients so they worked in "magical" ways, they didn't know how or why they worked, only that they had "miraculous" healing beautifying powers. It really is no secret if you understand how and when ingredients are absorbed by skin.
Nowadays we know scientifically how there ingredients benefit our skin. Pharmaceutical companies extract them or try to produce them synthetically and charge you the consumer billions of dollars a year to use them.
